Mike enjoys working with founders who are deeply steeped in their domain, feel like they’ve got something to prove, and are borderline obsessed with their idea. The passion that this creates touches all the key aspects of company formation: recruiting, selling, and (yes) fundraising. He started his VC career by joining Battery Ventures where he fell in love with the entrepreneur-facing aspect of venture capital and the ability to work with a wide array of people and technologies.

Mike joined Index in 2009, to help establish the firm's San Francisco office with Danny Rimer. Mike invests primarily in infrastructure, open-source, and artificial intelligence companies. He's currently serving the boards of Aurora, Cockroach Labs, Confluent, Covariant.ai, Elastic, Kong, Sonos, Starburst, and Wealthfront. Mike was previously a director of Blue Bottle Coffee, Hortonworks, and Zuora. Mike held several executive positions prior to Index, including Chief Strategy Officer and SVP/GM of Cisco's routing business. Mike managed a P&L in excess of $10 billion in revenues, and his team was responsible for the acquisition of over 70 companies, some of which were multi-billion deals.

Lenny started his VC career in New York at the height of the social and mobile booms where seemingly the entire tech world was chasing the next Instagram or WhatsApp. To him, technology was always about leverage, enabling us to do more with less, to build better, faster, and cheaper, and unlock new applications and services. Fast forward a decade later, and his exploration of cloud computing, DevOps, data infrastructure, and security led me to work with generational founders of companies like Datadog, Hashicorp, and Cockroach Labs.

Kevin Mahaffey said he was building software by age 8. Since then, the self-professed hacker has channeled his talent into starting the cybersecurity firm Lookout. He also serves as the chair of his wife’s startup, Stork Club, which partners with major insurance providers to help employees manage out-of-pocket costs for maternity and fertility care. As a successful angel investor, he also helps others build durable companies. Ten of the startups in his portfolio grew their private-market valuations to $1 billion or higher, including the workplace data-management startup People.ai, which hit its unicorn milestone in August. Trust is the key to his investing success, Mahaffey said. “Startups tend to be an emotional roller coaster, with things never as good or as bad as they seem,” he said. “The path can be lonely, and it’s always better knowing you have someone in your corner.”
