Solo GPs are one-person venture funds, which means you're pitching directly to the decision-maker—no associate screen, no Monday partner meeting, no internal champion who has to sell your deal to skeptics. This can dramatically compress your fundraising timeline; some solo GPs wire money within days of a first meeting. But that speed cuts both ways. Because there's no investment committee to slow things down, a solo GP's "no" often comes just as fast, and there's no second partner to appeal to if the first conversation doesn't click. The relationship you build is entirely with one person, so founder-investor fit matters more here than almost anywhere else in venture. Do your homework on the GP's background, portfolio, and what they actually enjoy working on—these investors tend to have sharper theses and less patience for pitches outside their strike zone.
The practical tradeoff with solo GPs is capacity. A single person can only sit on so many boards and answer so many founder texts, so many solo GPs write smaller checks, take fewer board seats, or explicitly position themselves as helpful co-investors rather than leads. That's not a weakness if you want a lighter-touch investor who won't crowd your cap table with governance demands. But if you need someone who will roll up their sleeves on recruiting, customer intros, or heavy board involvement, ask directly about how they allocate time across their portfolio—some solo GPs are stretched thin by fund three. One underrated upside: solo GPs often have more flexible fund structures and can do SPVs or follow-on investments opportunistically, which can matter if your round is weird-shaped or you want a fast bridge later.
