About this Sheet

IoT investors are a different breed from your typical software VCs—they've made peace with hardware economics, which most funds actively avoid. That said, "IoT-friendly" doesn't mean "hardware-first." Many investors on this list are really betting on the recurring software and data layers that sit on top of connected devices, not the devices themselves. When you pitch, be explicit about where your margins actually live. If your business model depends on device sales, expect harder questions about manufacturing costs, inventory risk, and channel strategy. If you're selling a platform or data service that happens to require hardware, lead with the software economics and treat the device as a customer acquisition tool. The investors who get IoT understand this distinction intuitively—they're looking for the SaaS-like revenue streams hiding inside physical products.

Pay attention to which vertical each fund actually knows. IoT is a sprawling category, and an investor who backed industrial sensor companies will pattern-match very differently than one focused on consumer wearables or smart home. The former cares about enterprise sales cycles and integration with legacy systems; the latter wants to see consumer demand signals and retail distribution plans. Also worth noting: many IoT-focused funds have deep relationships with strategic acquirers and corporate partners who can become customers, co-developers, or eventual buyers. This matters more in IoT than in pure software because pilot programs with large industrials or OEMs can de-risk your go-to-market in ways that a SaaS startup doesn't need. Ask directly about a fund's corporate network—the best IoT investors aren't just writing checks, they're opening doors to the companies that will actually deploy your product at scale.
