Payments investors are a specific breed within fintech—they've usually seen enough pitch decks to know that "disrupting payments" means nothing without a clear answer to the unit economics question. The economics of moving money are notoriously thin (we're talking basis points, not percentages), so these investors will stress-test your take rate, interchange split, and path to volume before anything else. They also know that payments is a game of compounding network effects and switching costs, which means they're looking for wedges that get sticky fast: vertical-specific workflows, embedded finance hooks, or infrastructure that becomes load-bearing for your customers. If you're building an application layer product, be ready to explain how you avoid getting squeezed when Stripe or Adyen inevitably launches something adjacent. If you're building infrastructure, know that these investors understand the long sales cycles and will ask hard questions about your first five enterprise contracts.
One nuance worth knowing: payments investors tend to bifurcate into "infrastructure believers" and "application layer believers," and it's worth figuring out which camp a fund falls into before you pitch. Infrastructure-focused funds have more patience for longer build cycles and lower initial revenue, but they'll want to see technical depth and a credible path to becoming a platform. Application-focused funds want to see faster go-to-market and clearer consumer or SMB traction, but they're more skeptical of margin sustainability. Also, many payments-focused investors have strong opinions on geography—cross-border payments, emerging market rails, and regional payment methods (PIX, UPI, SEPA instant) are hot, but you'll need to show you understand the regulatory patchwork. The best meetings happen when you can speak their language: interchange economics, PCI compliance, sponsor bank relationships, and settlement flows. Come prepared to talk specifics.
