Founded by leaders of two major nonprofit news outlets, American Journalism Project builds local newsrooms by combining funding with hands-on support in areas like revenue, hiring, and AI, using research from thousands of community residents to guide its strategy. Rather than just rescuing existing publications, AJP aims to grow a sustainable, nonprofit news industry at scale, tracking newsroom growth like an investor while positioning local reporting as essential civic infrastructure for communities.
