What Makes them Unique

Arkane, led by physicist-turned-investor Arkady Kulik, focuses on mapping specific scientific problems rather than picking individual companies, using AI agents to build detailed 400–500 page reports on patents, research, and founders before investing, then backing 17–60 companies around a single need so that one or two can become the breakout winner. As a small $21M fund making about $350K checks, Arkane is built around the idea that important opportunities start in science and problem-space first, forming an alliance between scientists and entrepreneurs to turn scientifically intensive work into companies.

Video Interview

On building a tiered outreach list

"Have at least three different tiers, ideally four different tiers of VCs that you can talk to... Tier number zero is your friendly VCs, no matter if they invest in your area or not, just to show them the pitch deck... do some role play with them, try to get as much feedback on how you tell your story."

Thoughts on the competition slide

"I don't care for having a competition slide in the deck in the first place. Especially when we're talking about early stage startups... competition will change so many times over the next couple of years that... it is kind of a waste of time... I always show my founders a comparison between a rock and an iPhone. Rock has all of those green ticks and iPhone has all of the red crosses next to it."

On time-boxing diligence

"We've optimized the process in such a way that if it's not a fit, the founder would not spend more than 30 minutes with us. If it is a fit... no more than three and a half hours of net time of the founder will be spent on our process. I'm very respectful of their time."

On the reality of raising venture capital

"The absolute worst type of capital you can ever raise in your life is equity financing. The absolute worst. What is there to celebrate? You just found a way to put a lot of liability on your shoulders."
