What Makes them Unique
Video Interview
On the real power dynamic in a first meeting
"This isn't like a bank checking to see if they can give a loan. This is like every founder I meet, I'm hoping they sell me something amazing and I'm leaning in."
On when to skip your market-size slide
"If you're talking like I'm going to solve for nuclear energy, you don't need to spend time talking about the energy market... But if you're talking about... problems for lawnmowers, I probably need to understand what that market size is, because I don't know."
On VC attention spans
"Recognize that the attention span of humans is low. The attention span of VCs is probably getting closer to like fruit fly level. So get to the point quickly, and then you can elaborate on the other stuff."
On what an investor can and cannot give you
"We are an inch deep, a mile wide... investors come with an orthogonal experience... I can bring you lateral insight, but the depth is never gonna come from your potential investor or board member. If I was, I'd be in your shoes instead."
On sequencing your fundraise
"Try to... do a few test runs with firms that you think are good, but maybe not your dream firm. Then you really bucket into the firms that you think are perfect... And then go to the rest. Because what you don't want is to have someone that you thought was good but not great so far down the process before you get a chance to go to the one that was your dream firm."
