Atsushi Usami holds a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Tokyo and is a licensed pharmacist, and he uses that scientific background to work closely with researchers from before their companies even exist, helping start four companies and guiding deals like OriCiro Genomics (later acquired by Moderna) and Repertoire Genesis (later acquired by Eurofins) from early technology review through CEO search and long-term product strategy. This combination of scientific training and hands-on company-building has been recognized publicly, including the Encouragement Award for Venture Capitalists at the 2023 Japan Venture Awards, for his support of more than 15 startups in life sciences and biotech.
