Hans T. Schambye trained as both an MD and PhD, did postdoctoral research at Stanford, and then chose applied science over academia, later starting Galecto after being asked to scout Scandinavian research groups for Novo's seed arm and working essentially on sweat equity for two years before the company had enough funding; over his career he has built investor groups on both sides of the Atlantic, raised more than $500 million, held the unusual dual role of Director of Biology and Pharmacology and Head of Portfolio Management at Maxygen, and co-founded companies including ProFound Pharma. He is also chairman of Danish Bio, where he speaks openly about keeping strong biotech companies in Denmark rather than moving them to the US, and he has said that building a talented team able to work at high quality and high speed is what most improves the chances of getting a therapy to patients.
