Jakob Diepenbrock started in venture unusually early through Steve Ballmer's family office while in college, then relocated to El Segundo to build Discipulus Ventures around the region's dense hardware and defense ecosystem rather than operating as a remote capital provider. He runs an immersive cohort program combining 6 a.m. workouts, daily mentorship, and live-in residency for technical founders in their early 20s who have hands-on industry experience and are motivated by service to the country.
What they've been talking about across their social media accounts

- Focusing heavily on El Segundo as the absolute best place in the world for hardware startups. Refers to the area as Gundo and views it as the epicenter of modern physical tech innovation. A prime example is pointing out how Elon Musk started in an El Segundo warehouse back in 2002, using that as proof that Americans can still build impossible things and to inspire a whole new generation of founders moving to the area.
- Prioritizing American manufacturing, patriotism, and the broader reindustrialization movement. Loves seeing physical goods made in America, whether that means domestically manufactured apparel or actual nuclear reactors. Ties the current wave of hardware startups to the original spirit of the country and actively cheers on founders who are bringing industrial capabilities back home.
- Recruiting early stage founders through the Discipulus fund and its associated cohorts. Just closed a 30 million dollar oversubscribed fund geared specifically toward getting global founders to relocate and build physical tech. Constantly pushes out application links for new cohorts and gets genuinely excited about the wild and ambitious startup ideas people submit to the firm.
Video Interview
On why first-time founders should start small before swinging for top-tier VCs
"Start with angels who like you as a person and want to help you as a person... that kind of gives you a baseline, and then go to lower-tier funds who can also kind of help give you a pat on the back... as you build up a base and have momentum on the fundraise, that's when you kind of go to the big funds you want to talk to."
On the one thing that will immediately end a conversation with him
"Don't lie about stuff, don't over-represent stuff. Something I've actually had, just like, I'm done, I'm not gonna talk to them again."
On the mistake founders make when trying to manufacture urgency near the close
"You shouldn't over-represent another investor's interests. You shouldn't make false deadlines unless you have a way to enforce them. You shouldn't act arrogant. I see a lot of first-time founders try to act like, 'oh yeah, if you miss out on this, you're stupid.' People will just think you don't know what you're talking about. So yeah, don't do that. Just be kind."
On how tight-knit the hard-tech investor world really is
"In this space, like the hard-tech space, I know very often with these investors and they talk about who they're talking to. If I bring somebody up and say this was a bad experience, like, yeah, I don't want to talk to them. We all know each other very well in the industry. We're sharing stuff together. Founders have to understand that."
On what he really looks for in a founder
"What we like to see is someone very young, very technical, deep in touch with a particular problem, and that drives them to want to create this solution. There's usually some deeper reason behind it, whether it's a family connection or a deep value that drives them to solve the problem they're focusing on."

Discipulus Ventures is a venture capital fund built around conservative ideals like patriotism, religion, and family, seeking founders who want to revive Norman Rockwell-style Americana rather than build companies just for money or status. The fund operates an intense, military-style residency program in El Segundo focused on hard tech and defense startups that serve the national interest, featuring 6 a.m. workouts and connections to top defense-tech networks.
