Mike Nolan brings an unusual background to angel investing at Walnut Venture Associates, having worked as an F-15 pilot and trainer and in Air Force test work before studying at MIT's System Design and Management program, and he now focuses on machine learning startups by checking their claims against academic papers and open research to see if they're really different from what's already out there. He first got involved with Walnut after listening to the Angel Invest Boston podcast, and he's especially interested in healthcare applications of AI, as seen in his work with Piction Health, where he was drawn to the company's proprietary data advantage in dermatology image recognition.
