Steve Weinstein's background spans Hollywood, government, and tech in a way that's rare for a venture investor, having served as CEO of MovieLabs (the joint research lab of the major movie studios), CTO at companies like Deluxe Entertainment, Rovi, Vicinity, and Liberate, and a researcher at the Naval Research Laboratory before moving into venture work. He's also helped teach and build programs that turn public-service problems into real companies, including Stanford's Hacking for Defense and related programs like Hacking for Oceans and Hacking for Climate, and now serves as Chairman of the Board at Roadrunner, where he focuses on frontier technology beyond the usual Silicon Valley and New York hubs.
About their Fund
Roadrunner Venture Studios is an Albuquerque, New Mexico deep tech company creation platform that builds businesses from the ground up alongside technical founders. Its focus spans energy, advanced manufacturing, quantum, and advanced materials, and its stated aim is to keep the U.S. the best place in the world to commercialize deep tech, positioning itself as the nation's go-to platform for identifying, founding, and investing in deep tech, and a de-risking vehicle for the American technological renaissance. Rather than acting as a pure capital source, Roadrunner describes itself as a "venture outfitter" that turns ideas into companies by equipping scientists and technologists with everything they need to succeed, from capital to talent to top-to-bottom advising, using a network of operators and government and private partners to move technologies from the lab to market.
Alongside the studio sits the Roadrunner Fund, anchored by a $50M commitment from the New Mexico State Investment Council, which writes roughly $1M pre-seed checks primarily into companies coming out of the studio.
