Zak Morimoto has worked as a board member and business development leader at Honda R&D Innovations, McKinsey, Sony, and DeNA, and before moving into venture capital he was COO of ExVision, where he demonstrated gesture-interface technology himself; he also teaches at Pegasus University, sits on the board of the Japan Society of Northern California, hosts Bay Area gatherings for Japanese investors and founders, and has written a book on what Japanese companies can learn from Sony, McKinsey, DeNA, and Silicon Valley. He has a specific view of how startups and big companies should work together—startups spot what's coming and build the breakthrough tech, while large corporations bring manufacturing and supply-chain strength, with the real challenge being who should partner and how—and he also talks about how certain places, like Aichi/Nagoya, can build their own version of what made Silicon Valley succeed.
