Matrix Partners was founded from the breakup of Hellman Ferri Investment Associates, with Paul Ferri choosing to focus on very early-stage tech while his partner built a later-stage firm, giving Matrix unusually deep roots in the formative era of US venture capital. The firm has deliberately kept its U.S. fund sizes modest at $450M while peers raised multi-billion-dollar vehicles, and built a distinctive reputation as a "metrics-first" SaaS investor through partner David Skok's widely used essays on SaaS metrics that have become industry-standard playbooks for founders.
