Alain Parthoens cofounded Newton Biocapital with Goro Takeda to link Belgian and European biotech with Japan's pharmaceutical industry, and before that he was an early or lead investor in several Belgian biotech companies, including OncoMethylome, TiGenix, CropDesign, Unibioscreen, and MTI, as well as Ogeda, whose hot-flash treatment was later approved by the FDA under Astellas. He has also served as chairman of the Belgian Venture and Private Equity Association and holds a parallel role as managing partner at Vesalius Biocapital alongside his position at Newton Biocapital.
About their Fund
Newton Biocapital operates as a Belgium-Japan biotech fund with offices in Brussels and Tokyo, founded by Alain Parthoens and Goro Takeda and later joined by Japan-based leaders Tomoko Asaoka and Sadashi Suzuki; it became the first European venture capital fund certified by Japan's Agency for Medical Research and Development and one of the first foreign funds admitted to a Health Ministry-supported translational drug discovery program, while also using its first fund to help create four academic spin-offs and one spin-out. The fund sources Japanese platform companies like PRISM BioLab, EditForce, J-Pharma, and Perseus Proteomics for European capital and networks, and its first fund built investor syndicates where every euro it invested was matched by a multiple from other investors.
