Daisuke Morishita built his career on rescuing cancer drug programs that were at risk of being abandoned, spinning them out as new companies based on his research into RNA biology and aiming for first-in-class treatments rather than small improvements on existing drugs. Drawing on his time in Boston, he has worked to bring companies, universities, and hospitals closer together in Japan, at one point spending half his week working directly alongside academic partners in Kyoto, and he continues to expand this approach by bringing other companies into the collaboration while also mentoring young scientists entering the field.
About their Fund
Newton Biocapital operates as a Belgium-Japan biotech fund with offices in Brussels and Tokyo, founded by Alain Parthoens and Goro Takeda and later joined by Japan-based leaders Tomoko Asaoka and Sadashi Suzuki; it became the first European venture capital fund certified by Japan's Agency for Medical Research and Development and one of the first foreign funds admitted to a Health Ministry-supported translational drug discovery program, while also using its first fund to help create four academic spin-offs and one spin-out. The fund sources Japanese platform companies like PRISM BioLab, EditForce, J-Pharma, and Perseus Proteomics for European capital and networks, and its first fund built investor syndicates where every euro it invested was matched by a multiple from other investors.
