Eric Shu is a former U.S. Marine Corps artillery officer and current Marine reservist in the Marine Innovation Unit who invests in cybersecurity, dual-use, defense and space startups at Access Ventures, giving him direct exposure to defense innovation needs from inside the Pentagon ecosystem. He runs the Colorado chapter of Pitch and Run, a community where founders and investors combine trail running with startup pitching, reflecting his identity as an ultrarunner who completed 100-mile mountain races and his preference for outdoor relationship building over traditional conference rooms.
What they've been talking about across their social media accounts

- Organizing and participating in community running events as an active way to network with founders and peers. A specific example is the weekly Friday morning runs at Cheesman Park in Denver where founders are explicitly invited to exercise and pitch their startup ideas before grabbing coffee.
- A strong focus on national security, dual-use technology, and supporting the military veteran community. For instance, putting together a networking happy hour in San Francisco specifically for veteran and deep tech venture capitalists, and regularly sharing helpful resources like market maps for dual-use manufacturing.
- Championing the Colorado tech ecosystem while making early-stage investments nationwide. A prime example is actively promoting the release of a comprehensive state venture capital report to highlight local founders, while simultaneously organizing intimate dinners for early-stage investors during work trips to other major tech hubs.
- Reading and discussing non-fiction books covering technology, geopolitics, and personal health. A great example is starting a public reading group for a popular book about the global semiconductor industry and asking peers for recommendations on literature related to sleep and personal habits.
Video Interview
On why a "no" from a VC is rarely about you
"A lot of times it's not you, it's us. The VC world is also its own business and there's a lot of other politics at play. It's just something to keep in mind when you're pitching investors."
On the one thing that actually matters in a pitch dec
"What's the problem? What's the scope of the problem? Why does it matter? Why is it a challenging, complex issue that hasn't been solved? And then what's your approach to solving it? Everything else, there's other avenues to collect that data."
On red flags in a first meeting
"Name dropping is super annoying. And the other thing that's a red flag is when founders give off the signal that they have a lot of interest and it's such a hyped deal that they're doing you a favor. I want to work with somebody who wants to build a long-term partnership."
On founders doing their own diligence on investors
"Ask the investor to introduce you to a couple of their CEOs, and you choose the CEO. Don't just have them introduce you to the ones they think are great. Go find one that maybe is kind of struggling. Get a sense of how they've worked with founders in the good times and the hard times."
On why the cap table deserves as much thought as the product
"Building a cap table is just as important as building your product. If they're rubbing you the wrong way and it's not helpful during diligence, well, is it really worth taking their money?"
