Matt Logan built his reputation at Earthshot Ventures by personally reaching out to over 500 companies during Fund I, a hands-on sourcing approach that led directly to investments like KoBold Metals and Etched, and it grew out of a decade-plus climate career that started with a Cleantech Group internship in 2010 and included raising a Series B and $200M in project finance for Advanced Microgrid Solutions. He looks for companies that win on cost and performance first, with climate benefits as a bonus, and applies that lens to areas like AI's energy and infrastructure needs, robotics for dangerous jobs, and space tech for agriculture and wildfire monitoring—an approach he connects to the same all-in mindset that's driven his decade-long pursuit of a sub-2:30 marathon.
Video Interview
On how deals actually get sourced
"I have sourced seventeen investments in our first fund. Nine of those I sourced through cold outbound... I keep my own CRM of eight hundred or so companies that I'm tracking, and that's probably where I differentially spend more of my time than the average VC, is going outbound."
On diligencing the VC before they join your cap table
"Before you let someone on a cap table, I do think you should reference very aggressively. Talk to the people the VC tells you to talk to, but then figure out... some of the companies that have gone under that they've backed, and talk to those people too... VCs can say a lot of the right things, but what they actually do when the chips are down is what really matters."
On what he looks for in a founder
"A lot of the founders that we gravitate towards the most are just very intense people. They have an intensity bordering on obsession that's magnetic. You don't have to be charismatic in the classic sense, but... that intensity is really helpful for attracting talent, which in turn is really helpful for raising money."
On the pitch deck slide to cut
"Just don't put an exit slide... We only invest in companies where we think that, if the world breaks in a certain way, you can go public someday. So it's just not very interesting to say that. And if you're listing strategic acquirers... you're not thinking big enough."
On what early traction actually needs to show
"If you can show... we've raised zero money and we've grown a hundred percent every month for the last four months, someone's gonna do your pre-seed... It's about the inflection more so than the absolute point on the graph."
